Faizal Akalwaya
Director and co-founder of HAFA Design Studio.
Graduate of the Manchester School of Architecture,
BA(Hons) Architecture.
With almost half a decade of experience in design and build for domestic projects, my focus architecturally is on making functional spaces that are respectful of client budgets, yet, uncompromised aesthetically. Environmental sustainablility and occupational comfort is also at the forefront of my design process. Embodied carbon and construction costs can be reduced by working with what is available on site rather than starting from a blank slate. I have a strong belief that communication and collaboration are key to a successful design, and so we make sure to develop scehemes not just for clients, but with them, rationalising decisions together on the journey towards approval and construction.

Having worked in a domestic scale architectural practice based in Greater Manchester for half a decade, my experience of planning application submissions and in liaising with officers means that I can offer an insight into the routes towards approval and the feasability of a scheme from a planning perspective. I also believe that clear communication throughout the process and transparency is key to a smooth and successful application. To this end, we maintain an open dialogue with clients and planning officers to ensure the deliverability of a project. We aim to make what can be a challenging system to negotiate easier to understand.
HAFA Design Studio
As a collaborative design practice we are always open to different scopes and projects, as well as working with a diverse range of craftspeople, contractors and designers. One example of how we work collaboratively is in project delivery where we team up with tradespeople to understand how best to approach a design for an easy delivery on site. We value our contractors highly and recognise their skills and experience of the construction field, be they furniture makers, builders, electricians or plumbers etc. We enjoy working with people that are as passionate as us on having well designed, constructed projects and making a clients dream come true.
